For some reason you're not notified of friend requests. 
Just today I was going through my profile & filling in some blanks, when I saw that I had a friend request.
I wasn't sure how long it's been there but I gladly accepted (of course).
To make sure no one else has the same problem, I suggest everyone to check their Friends and Foes section in your Profile to check for requests or create one.
